Monday I wrote about how God has used the story of Elijah and the widow of Zarepath to teach me.  Did it sound like a piece of cake?

Not so much.

Here’s an honest conversation I had with the Lord recently.

Me: Lord, I’m ticked…really disappointed and discouraged.  I kind of want to throw my handful of flour back in your face and call it a day.

Honestly, Lord??  What I REALLY want is for You to take my flour and oil and make a ginormous fancy-shmancy cake worthy of the Cake Boss, that people will “ooh” and “aahh” over.

But instead it seems like my flour and oil concoction usually turns out looking more like an ordinary, boring tortilla.

God: Be still and know that I am God.  Don’t “work it”.  Don’t strive.  Don’t get out your frosting and try to make your tortilla into a wedding cake.

Me: I really get tired of the “be still” line Lord.  You got something else?

God: Maybe someone needs a tortilla today.

Me: Whatever

And then Paul interrupted:  “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you:  Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering.” Romans 12:1 MSG

“Your everyday ordinary life.”

Do you ever feel like it just isn’t “enough”?  Too tortilla-y?

I remember when my grandmother learned she was going blind.  No Pollyanna, she was honest about the challenges.  But when she learned all the things she couldn’t do that she had done as a volunteer in ministry before, she said, “You know, I have a really nice phone voice.  I could call the people who have visited our church and welcome them.

Her flour and oil.  Not a fancy cake, but a tortilla that God used.

Ask God to show you where your gifts and resources intersect with the world’s greatest needs.

Stop waiting and start working with what you’ve got.

Maybe someone needs a tortilla today.

Do you have a story to share of a way that God has taken your flour and oil and made a tortilla that has blessed others?
